Ratatouille (2007) : "A Sweet Irony Behind A Piece of Gourmet Art"

Live a black mouse
named Remy (Oswalt) on a village outskirts. In a unique way, he introduced the
life difficulties he had to face because of his zoological status. And of
course, since it is different from mice in general, Remy has an advantage in
the sense of taste and smell. And it makes him a very mice of food and a chef
named Auguste Gusteau (Garret). This ability is of course underestimated,
especially by the father who is the leader of the rat colony, Django (Dennehy).
Because of this obsession that also led to chaos and separate Remy with
colonies. In the midst of his depression and solitude, Remy who hallucinates by
speaking to the spirit of Gusteau (or pigment of imagination more likely) is
then led to the Gusteau restaurant.
Remy is excited and self-absorbed,
then fixes the chaos created by Linguini (Romano) with the soup, which then
instead creates a new mess. Linguini was later regarded as the chef by all the
chefs in the restaurant Gusteau, especially by the rotissuer Colette
(Garofalo). Linguini later worked with Remy, with Remy's reliable cooking
skills and Linguini's appearance as a normal human, quickly reaching their
peak, despite the suspicions of the chef de cuisine Skinner (Holm) and the
challenge of the famous food critics Anton Ego (O'Toole ). Did Remy and
Linguini trick everyone and defeat the cruel criticism of the Ego?
In the past, before
watching this movie in 2008an, I include people who are still just suspicious
with the premise. Because it is rare there is a film that lifts the world
cooking professional cooking, moreover this is an animated film, with the main
character of a mouse. Less ironic how to try, a black mouse that is identical
to dirty and dirty can actually cook complicated dishes and beautiful. ala
haute cuisine But this is Pixar, when a premise nyeleneh this made, the result
of course not play games. Brad Bird, (The Incredible, Mission Imposible: Ghost
Protocol) as the person in charge of directing and screening succeeds in
creating an animated film that not only entertains, but also details on its
various sides, and certainly touches, an incredible power always in every Pixar
movie.
There are many reasons
why Paris is chosen as the location of Ratatouille itself. The first because of
the romantic element of the film itself, whether it's from the atmosphere that
was from the beginning built up to the relationship Linguini-Collete. And of
course, because Paris itself is known as the center of gourmet dish around the
world. Yes, French Cuisine is a science of its own in the culinary world, and
almost all the classical terms in the kitchen are indeed from French, such as
the hierarchy of chefs in the kitchen and cooking terms like sautee, roux,
fondue, mirepoix, etc. And may I say ... Paris never looked really Paris
before. The beauty of Paris, from the city's panoramas, city lights, the Seine,
to the famous Eiffel tower is described in such detail, and I even seem to be
able to smell the air of Paris. It is so wonderful ....
In addition to taking
the setting in Paris, there are many things to add to the authenticity of the
world of gourmet cuisine in Paris. Such as the depiction of a Gusteau character
who died after his dish was reviewed ugly and made him lose Michelin stars, it
was based on Chef Bernard Louiseau who murdered himself when the media
predicted his three-star restaurant La Cote d'Or descended to a two star. Or
the name Alfredo Linguini which comes from the name of typical Italian cuisine.
And especially from the title selection, stressing the word 'rat' and also a
French dish from Nice and Provence, a vegetable stew dish from tomatoes,
onions, zucchini, eggplant, bell peppers, garlic, marjoram, and basil.
Ratatouille itself is a typical French rural dish, which Remy later cooked in
the ultimate scene, as a simple dish as well as complex and complex (the one in
a movie created by a gourmet chef named Thomas Keller).
One thing I really like
about the movie is in Michael Giachinno's scoring music, which sounds so
cheerful and very French-esque, accompanying the ups and downs of the storyline
with the light pace. I seemed to be beside Remy, watching her cook a variety of
elaborate dishes, and almost can smell the food itself.
And oh boy, all of the
characters are quite lovable! From Remy's super-bodily and ironic, quirky, yet
most normal-looking figure amongst other human characters, then there's the
super-clunky Linguini character and the gestures of his body that invite a big
laugh, and Collete completes the trio as a super bad woman and grumpy yet tough
in the kitchen. On the side of the antagonist there is a comic Chef Skinner,
whose body language, body size, until his behavior is inspired by Louis de
Funes, a French comedy actor (1914-1983) and Anton Ego inspired by Louis
Jouvet, French actor and director ( 1887-1951), both present to be very tough
opponents for Remy-Linguini. And oh yes, Remy sister's character, Emile is more
a trouble-maker!
So do not be surprised
if then this Ratatouille then became one of the favorite movie of many people,
especially me, from Pixar own. Overall the movie may be animated, but the
beauty and details can not be underestimated and considered one eye. A fun
movie watched with family, age-friendly, but not necessarily a 'childish' work.
It's almost really perfect in every aspect, a very beautiful art. A beautiful
story that is so persuasive, that i can even drooling for everything in it. And
please, Pixar, I know you guys are being so addicted recently to making a
sequel or a prequel of your famous stories, but for this one ... please, leave
it alone, unless you really have a very strong script. Let it be alone and
prefect and untouchable. I love it so much.
And above from all of
the delicious food, behind the hot pot and fire in the kitchen, besides a sweet
but ironic story about a rat who loves cooking, tucked a beautiful story, that
not everyone can be a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere,
sometimes world is just too cruel for them. Happy pursuing your beautiful
dreams, the dream-catcher. This is a gift from an artist to every artist in the
world. Only truly artist can be great.
